Up In Arms

Welcome to Jestertunes! If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Feel free to leave a comment, read through the archives, and enjoy yourself. See you again real soon!

I was going to let this go. I swear I was. I swear I was going to keep the discussion over at Scott-O-Rama and not bring it to my own site this time. However, I have this problem of feeling obligated to respond to people who write to me via MY website.

This post will provide the background, as I don’t have the time at the moment to fully respond since Total Eclipse has a gig this evening and we are of course running behind.

This all started because Scott wrote an article called, “The Two Faces of Christianity.” The spirit of the article was meant to point out the division within the Christian religion between the “compassionates” and the “extremists.” The article is well written, thought out, and presented with a minimum of inflammatory remarks. It does, however, rightly condemn the makers of a new video game based on the popular “Left Behind” series.

The video game stars a Super Christian and features such great game-playing moments as converting or killing Muslims, Jews, Catholics, and homosexuals.

I couldn’t make that up if I tried.

The article exploded on religion.netscape.com (over 500 comments when I last checked) but I can’t bring myself to start reading there since the discussion got so heated just within the 80 or so people who commented on Scott’s site.

I of course could not remain silent, especially after several commenters threw around “facts” about the Bible and making statements such as, “it is a FACT that God hates homosexuals.” Which prompted my second response:

I suppose what I most want to know, is what are all these Bible-thumping bigoted, judgmental “Christians” doing on Scott-o-Rama?

Secondly, I’ve asked this same question on my own (and other) sites in the past and have NEVER been given an answer:

Can someone, anyone, PLEASE make an argument to me against homosexuality that is not based on the Bible or other faith-based text? Just one valid argument is all I’m asking for…

No matter what you believe in, stating that the BIBLE is a FACT, is just moronic. The Bible exists, yes, that’s a fact. God exists? Not a fact.

Fact: noun; Knowledge or information based on real occurrences.

Fact: Homosexuals are humans who should be afforded the same rights and opportunities as anyone else.

Fact: This post was about a video game depicting the violent and brutal slaying by “Christians” of anyone who does not believe the way they do. Not a missive about gays and “Christians.”

Fact: If I were to create a software about an atheist seeking out churches and systematically killing the priests, nuns, and congregation for being idiots, you can bet every single Christian organization on the planet would be calling for my immediate stoning. It’s hypocritical, and two faced, hence The Two Faces of Christianity.

And that my dear friends is apparently what Mr. Wayne Cooper is up in arms about. He wrote me via the contact page:

Dear Jester:

I saw your post concerning Scott’s writing about a video game as it relates to
homosexuality. You kept writing about what is fact and what is not. Well, I
would like for you to read my post (Dec. 15th) concerning the same subject and
I do believe that what I have written will represent what the facts are
concerning homosexuality!

Sincerely,

Wayne Cooper

At first I mistakenly thought he meant I should read a post on his own website, but as I can not seem to find one, I realized that he meant I should re-read his comments on Scott’s.

This is the posting of “Facts About Homosexuality” by Mr. Cooper:

Dear Scott:

I read your post Blog about how Christianity has condemned your lifestyle of homosexuality and simply wanted to say that, that isn’t true at all! Many of the Gay community assume that since we believe that God and the Bible has clearly spoken on the issue, that we must hate them; nothing can be further from the truth!

I love all people…including members of the Gay community. What I do not and cannot condone is sexual perversion. See, I’m clear that God “intentionally” made Male & Female. I’m clear as to what God’s purpose was and is as it relates to human sexuality.

I’m clear that God did not make persons of the same sex compatible sexually speaking. Everyone knows that persons of the same sex CANNOT reproduce and bring new life into the world.

I’m also clear that as a Man, God did not intend that a Penis should penetrate another man’s Anus and vice-versa. And He did not intend that women would use “Gagets” to “try” to bring pleasure to each other. God, in His infinite wisdom already has provided the answers: A man’s Penis is designed to penetrate a woman’s vagina, and a woman’s vagina is designed to recieve a man’s penis. And a Anus, male or female is not designed to recieve a penis, in that, it is solely for the purpose of eliminating human toxic waste!

Now, my question is, what is so hateful about these facts?? Why is my thinking wrong?? It appears to me, that the Gay community is over-whelmed with guilt, and their issue over this matter is with God and not His people!

Respectfully Yours,

Wayne Cooper

Wayne also says a bit further down the page:

For the people who insist on living a sexually perverted lifestyle, you will someday stand before a Holy God who will judge you and consigned you to an everlasting state of conscious suffering, separated from God and Christ for all Eternity. Now, I know that the “unregenrate” mind cannot possibly comprehend the concept of Hell, and will therefore, reject any such notion.

However, God already have warned us that people will reject truth and will consequently, bring damnation upon themselves. Please look objectively at the Gospel Message, the evidence of God, both in Creation and on the human conscious says the Apostle Paul.

Wayne

So there’s the background. I encourage you to pop over and read the full article, and comments if your stomach is feeling particularly peppy.

Trust that I have plenty to say to Mr. Cooper when we return from playing a Surprise Birthday Party in San Jose.

You know, everytime I hear someone say “that’s wrong” [regarding homosexuality] and I ask why they think that, they always bring up the fact that the Bible says its wrong. So what if the Bible says it’s wrong? It doesn’t mean its wrong! You shouldn’t believe everything you read anyway. The Bible was written by one group’s opinion.

You have a lot of good points Jester, especially about the whole atheist video game thing, and it is hypocritical and two-faced. I don’t know about you, but I’m sick of this never ending religious hate battle that’s been going on since the dawn of time. Why can’t people just accept the fact that everyone is different and everyone is meant to be different?

Religion isn’t for the weak minded people. Religion is good if you can keep a stable head about it and accept the fact that things that applied centuries ago have changed today. If you can’t, you should keep your mouth closed.

Wow. I didn’t know people would start going after individuals at their own web site. Sorry!

I’m anxious to read your response to this guy. I’m going to be writing a follow-up post myself sometime in the next couple of days. I wanted to get in a few lighter-hearted posts before I did that though.

Thanks for the link, btw.

P.S. On the elf/santa illustration on your blog’s header, is that a sphincter or a mouth? ;-)

Miss Misery - Welcome, I haven’t seen you around these parts before!

The issue I think is mostly one of ignorance of other people’s beliefs. That and the very real phenomenon of ethno-centrism, in which a person is unable to grasp the validity of another’s belief, and placing their own superior to all others. I think religion was designed for the weak minded. Mind you, I didn’t say that only the weak minded get sucked in, just that it was originally intended as a way for the village leaders to keep control. Once the educated started looking around a bit, they’ve been able to point out the flaws and illogical thought processes behind it, and that’s the root cause of ALL our problems.

Damn those Sumerians for developing an alphabet.

Hey Scott - Don’t sweat it. I can handle the heat. You’ll see my response posted now.

I will gladly link you, especially when these sorts of discussions explode. I enjoy your site immensely, and I will say again that if my family weren’t so unlike me, you and I could be brothers! :D

As far as the jester up top, you’re the second person to ask that question. UMB (my bf) told me he thought it looked like a butt hole, so I added a circular piece to make it look more like kissing lips, and that made it look even more anal. So I decided to leave it.

Besides, aren’t the mouth and the sphincter mostly interchangeable? At least with a shower in between, anyway? ;)
