Lee and I went to our favorite Kosher Deli on Monday for lunch.

We ran across these wonderful gems at the front door.

I totally should have bought them to examine all the contents in detail.

Happy Passover, kids… here’s some plastic locusts and lice.

And I thought a gift of underwear and socks sucked.

The sad thing? I actually have the “bag of plagues” around the house somewhere…

Shiny - But WHY!?!? Do you play special frogs and lice games? Just when I thought I understood what was going on, the bag o’ plagues show up.

What is WRONG with the Jews? Shiny? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Does the bag of plagues have a song as catchy as the dreidel song?

Okay, okay. Let me do my best to tell you about what’s going on here:

* The whole notion of Passover is a “teach the story to your children” type of message. So they go through the entire story (Exodus 1-17 or so) and retell it with the use of “multimedia” — a la weird customs at the dinner table, weird foods to eat, etc.

The Ten Plagues are made into a fun-filled (and plush!) experience for the kids. After all — what kid doesn’t want a soft drop of blood, toy lice, a cuddly little boil or a pet hailstone? I give mad props for not censoring out (as much of) the Biblical stuff that’s fun and gorey.

* @ Avi — there is a fun song about Pharaoh waking up one morning with frogs covering his body. My brother’s kids learned it early on. I only wish there was another song about Pharaoh waking up covered in boils and sores. Something for Jewish nursery schools to embrace…

* @ Absurdist — there’s a hell of a lot more wrong with us than the plagues thing, believe me. Some of us are still buying retail. The shame!

Absurdist - I don’t know what’s WRONG with them, but I do know they make a MEAN reuben sandwich.

Avitable - Weeeeeee’re OFF to see the Pharaoh and hope he’s not covered in boils; the frogs and lice and blood and hail remind us of all of our toils….

Shiny - I’m going to ask ginamonster to make me a cuddly boil.

Hello - I almost bought them, may still. Maybe we should have a new feature here at Jestertunes, “Ask A Jew.” Shiny could be our resident smart-ass expert.

I’ve decided to assist you in all things Jewish with this cute illustration I found on the web, enhanced with my annotations from the Passover story:

EEW! A plush boil! Let me figure out how best to depict that without grossing me out like the one in the picture did.

The toy plagues are to distract the kids from the fact that they’re getting raw horseradish and parsley for dinner.

Can I be Shiny’s shiksa sidekick? I’ve got lots of experience having dated two Jews and logged 5+ years with them combined.

othurme - indeed.

Shiny - Hysterical. The plushies are that much funnier.

hello - Send me the boil and the blood.

Absurdist - Good luck with that shopping trip.

ginamonster - You’re talented… I’m sure you’ll figure it out!

Gwen - Remind me not to have dinner at your place. I’m sure Shiny can use all the shiksa’s he can get.

I would never serve that - it’s part of the ritual of Passover dinner - bitter herbs to remember the hardship of being Jewish and all. No, at my house you’d get a pork loin wrapped in bacon.

gwen - I occasionally eat bacon, but that’s it for the pork. I just can’t eat it. Blech.
