The Rules of Engagement

Rule #5: Be Sincere

“Do these jeans make me look fat?” It may be the scariest thing you’ll ever hear a woman say, outside of “I’m late.” It’s a question that requires tact and compassion. There is no right answer, and the only way to avoid certain doom and destruction is by remaining utterly sincere when you apologize.

Sincerity is closely tied to honesty. Don’t tell her you’re going to call her if you’re not. Don’t tell her that you will respect her in the morning, when you don’t respect her now. This isn’t a license to say mean things, but you have to mean what you say. Learn when to say what’s on your mind and when to shut up. She probably knows that she is having a bad hair day, but when you notice that it looks particularly nice tell her!

I think as I child my parents must have forced me to swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth because I am not able to withhold any information at all.

It could be the Night Court influence as well.

Liz - It could also be the alcohol-induced lack of inhibition. On the other hand, Dan Fielding is a pretty good excuse.
