American IdolThe top 8 guys are up tonight to fight for the all important spot in the top 12.

Tonight’s theme is the 80’s.

Luke Menard is up first and admits to being dressed as a ballerina by his sister as his most embarrassing moment. He is performing “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go” by Wham. So yeah, he’s very very cute, but his vocals are just terrible. It was really weak. I’ve yet to hear him hit a “power” note in any performance. Simon called it “weak.” He’s stealing my words again. Damn that Simon.

David Archuleta is thirsty and he has to pee. Nice. He’s playing the piano tonight. He’s picked “Another Day in Paradise” by Phil Collins. Another solid performance from David. He’s an incredible singer for being 17 years old. I did hear a couple of off notes this time. Simon wants him to lighten up a bit. He also predicted that David will be in the final 2 this season.

Danny Noriega is up next with “Tainted Love” by Soft Cell. Danny is the next Pete Burns. He’s going to end up a transexual performance artist off off off Broadway. I liked his vocals quite a lot, but his performance was pretty cheesy. I’m just not sure what to think about him. If he could stick to *singing* and not all this over the top bullshit. Simon called it “useless” and didn’t like anything about it.

David Hernandez has chosen Celine Dion’s “It’s All Coming Back to Me”. He’s got an incredible voice. In other years, he’d be in line to win. With the competition this season, he’s going to be doing well to make it into the top 6 or so. That is if he can get over the whole gay stripper scandal this week. Paula (who is definitely high tonight) thinks he has one of the best vocals of the season. Simon thinks he’ll breeze through to next week.

David Cook was supposed to go next, but apparently there’s a guitar issue, so Michael Johns is stepping in first. He’s picked “Don’t You Forget About Me” by Simple Minds. He’s got this Michael Hutchence/Jim Morrison vibe about him that makes me think he should really be in a band, not trying to be a solo artist. His vocals tonight were just sort of ok. I’m not on my feet or anything. The judges all liked him. Randy totally compared him to Michael Hutchence. I don’t think he’s going home this week.

David Cook’s guitar has been fixed. He’s picked “Hello” by Lionel Richie. He’s changed the arrangement to be edgier and guitar driven which I think is a great way to interpret the song. Again, David is one of those guys that should really be fronting a band. I really liked this performance. He’s got a great voice. He should sail through. This is my favorite so far tonight. Simon “loved it.”

Jason Castro is performing “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen. This is one of my all time favorite songs. I got a little choked up during this…and so did he. Paula in a moment of lucidity nailed it with the word “vulnerability.” Simon called it “absolutely brilliant.” Jason’s strongest performance so far. I totally love him.

Chikezie is the last guy up. He had a great performance last week, so I’m interested to see how well he does tonight. “She’s All The Woman I Need” by Luther Vandross/Whitney Houston is his pick. He’s doing a pretty good job with it. He’s got a lot of potential, but I haven’t been completely wowed by him yet. Simon doesn’t think it worked at all.

Here’s the recap based on tonight’s performances:

Safe:
David Archuleta
David Cook
Jason Castro

Danger Danger:
David Hernandez
Michael Johns
Chikezie

Bye Bye:
Luke Menard
Danny Noriega

Okay, so check this out.

I didn’t vote in the primary, because I couldn’t decide, adn couldn’t sleep with myself at night for voting for someone I was unsure about.

But I voted for 5706 (the lionel richie song that was TOTALLY AWESOME-LY REDONE!).

Go figure.

And I still blame you for making me watch it. I am now getting into it.

I am going to get into the girls on what, Thursday?

David Cook, Michael Johns, Jason Castro had the best performances for me. And I agree, if Danny would stop being so “MySpace-esque” then he would be better, he has a good voice but he gets on my nerves.

And I don’t really care for the little 17 year old’s voice. It isn’t strong enough and his weird breathing makes me crazy. He sounds like a 85 year old, asthmatic, pack-a-day smoker.

I can’t stand Danny! I thought David Cook and Jason Castro had the songs of the night followed by David Archuleta. Going home this week - oh I hope it’s Danny, but it will probably be Luke and Chitzenitza.

Did you see the very end when Paula couldn’t stand up? She sort of fell over and Simon helped her into her seat. Girl needs to lay off the pills!

Anyone who wants to sing a Celine Dion song should be evicted from American Idol. The same with anything from Alanis Morrisette.

Absurdist - I convert many people to American Idol each season. You’re welcome. The girls perform tonight and 2 of each get sent home tomorrow.

Kentucky Girl - I do think David Archuleta is simply fantastic. There is something a little off with the tone of his voice, but I think it’s an issue of age. Danny just annoys me, and I know that I should try to be supportive of the little gay boy, but he’s just too much for me.

Chris - Paula was clearly altered last night. I just love Jason Castro. He won’t win, but he should have a deal soon.

I.P. - I wish there would be a moratorium on Whitney, Mariah, Aretha, and Christina Aguilera songs, too.

I think the problem is that most pop music sounds the same. It is the same cookie cutter formuleic junk that turns people off. I wonder if these wanna bes could actually spend 15 minutes and look for a decent song. Find something unique and original.

David Archuleta is the one that had paralyzed vocal chords when he was a kid. I think that is most of what the tone of his voice is attributed to.

I.P. - They have to choose from a list of songs that the show has clearances for… so they are definitely “guided” toward particular songs, or groups of songs at least. Recent pop music sounds very much the same.

othurme - That’s right. I forgot about that. I still think he’s amazing.

yet again, we are on pretty much on the same page. but i hope danny still makes it into the top six because he has potential to do something surprisingly good.

plus i just want to see how the competition deals with all the scandalous skeletons falling out of the proverbial closets. and in david hernandez’s case, his literal one. it just feels so malicious whenever the idol wanna-bes get “outed” because they haven’t lived parochial lives.

Luke and Danny bye bye - You stole my words…. I may actually puke if I have to watch him “perform” again. And why oh why is Paula still allowed to sit in judgment of others? She really needs medical/mental attention.

John wrote on March 5th, 2008 at 3:36 pm

danny - If Danny can keep from camping it up so much he could do well. But I think he’ll be gone tonight. Also… what literal closet is David Hernandez’s skeletons falling from? :D Did a box of stripper photos fall from the shelf and land on the Enquirer’s editorial desk? Considering the fact that Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, et al are famous, I think it can only help to have a scandal in the AI camp.

John - I didn’t mean to steal your words! Paula is much needed comic relief. If things get tense you can always point at Paula and say, “Wow. She’s so HIGH!”

i just love to look at luke and i love that he is my friend’s nephew trying to get a break, but he really was in the bottom of that crowd last night. damn. i’ll keep looking at michael johns when luke is gone. and that one david or danny dude. who is the hot one again?

Hey I am here but I am being careful not to read anything about thre results or the girls’ show as I havent seen either of those yet (they are on tonight!). But I thought David Cook was ace - loved his rendition of Hello. I also loved Jason Castro but does he look a bit like Minnie Driver? It has be transfixed! Michael was just OK for me this week but still he is uberhot so hopefully will be safe. Luke, bless him, is cute as a button. Really cute. But quite shit so I think he will be gone soon. Chikesie keeps messing up at the start with his pitch which gets on my nerves and he is a bit blah. He does have a good voice though - just doesnt WOW me. Of course, I am writing all this and you know who has gone so I am probably making a tit of myself. Hey ho!
