Word Verification Sucks

Welcome to Jestertunes! If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Feel free to leave a comment, read through the archives, and enjoy yourself. See you again real soon!

I know not everyone can afford a web host of their own and like the anonymity of a free account from Blogger.

But I have to point out one of my biggest pet peeves EVER.

WORD VERIFICATION to prove you are human. They are almost always written in some crappy skewed font with squiggly lines running through it. Or the letters are upside down or backwards. They are in ambiguously mixed cases. Is that an L or a 1? Upside down 7 or a capital L?

And even if you carefully type the letters in, they aren’t always accepted as correct, which occasionally causes you to have to completely retype your comments and go through the whole process over again.

I was trying to leave a comment on Kristy’s blog today about her potential fertility problems. The first verification that came up was of course not accepted.

The second one looked like this:

Word Verification

I stared at it for a full three minutes. What is that? Is it W V or V W?

I consulted UMB.

He stared at it for a full minute. “It’s definitely V W.”

“How can you tell?”

He put his finger over the first part, and said, “Look at the thicker part of the line, it only makes sense if it’s W V.”

“But you just said it was definitely ‘V W’!”

“I did?”

“Yes.”

He looked at it again. “It IS V W… well… you know, now that I think about it, it’s W V.”

“So that’s your final answer, W V?” I asked, wondering if my comment was even worth this amount of discussion.

“No. It’s V W. You know that if you mess it up, it will just give you another one.”

“I know that, but this is already the second attempt. And I’m about ready to give up on it.”

So I entered it as “W V T D G U J M” and it worked.

Really, I don’t have anything to say that is important enough to go through that again.

To quote from “Anna and the King of Siam” - ” It’s a puzzlement” - lol

hello - Yeah, I will often weigh the need to comment with the hassle. The hassle wins often. I’m glad you enjoy the subscribe to comments. I found it over at scott-o-rama and totally loved it.

Crail - Indeed!

I hate word verification too, that’s why I turned it off for my blog. I bet a lot of bloggers don’t even know about it.

wayne - Welcome! I noticed when I was at your blog earlier today that you had turned it off. I don’t think the verification adds anything… if you’re worried about spam, you moderate, right?

What are you doing up at this hour?
Your site looks pretty cool. I may have to add it to my reader list. There’s just way too many good reads out there.

Wayne - Chronic insomnia is a bitch! I’m always up at this time. I’ve already added you to my reader, I haven’t really found that many good reads out there. There are too many of those “let’s just throw up a picture of beefcake” sites out there.

Umm.. not that I didn’t just post a picture from an A&F catalogue…

*ahem*

i’ve kinda turned the whole wv thing into a game. i love acronyms and it’s fun sometimes to see what i come up with but you’re right. most of the time they’re just a pain in the ass. i’ll have to look into how to moderate comments. i’m working when most of my 5 readers (lol) are commenting and i know that sometimes they have a conversation among themselves in my comments section. i don’t want to interfere with that but i don’t want a bunch of spam either. hmmm, just another perfect example of my techno ignorance. :-)

Heather - I wouldn’t really stress about spam comments until they actually become a problem. You could always move to your own server running Wordpress which has a spam-stopper built in… If only you knew someone who could give you server space and help you set up a wordpress site for cheap… :)

ah, but that is my reason for living. to stress about the bull and handle the real problems. :-)

rapidshare now has this insidious method where you get a bunch of the familiar frazzled letters only now there is either a cartoon dog or cat (!) and you have to pick out the four terms (out of seven or eight..) that have a cat in them

W T F

i guess that’s why it’s called “cat-chpta?”

Even worse - I’d just not even bother with that bullshit.
