Out here in California where the traffic levels are truly insane and most people can not afford to live near where they work, the cost of commuting is significant.

Take my situation, for instance: I live 43 miles from my office. On the average traffic day, the trip to work takes around 45 minutes. Coming home, it generally takes me an hour. On occasion, the one way trip from work to home can take up to three hours.

I know. That in itself is insane.

But let’s look at the cost of that commute. I drive a Toyota Matrix that averages 30 mpg. The round trip uses 2.8 gallons of gas.

The cheap gas by my house right now is $3.22/gallon. That means the gas alone costs me $9.01 every day.

I cross a toll bridge on the way home. That’s $4/day.

AAA averages the cost of car ownership, including insurance, taxes, maintenance, etc at $.35/mile. That equals $30.10 per day of driving to work.

The grand total: $43.11. PER DAY! The average work month has 20 days in it. Wanna do the math on that one? No? Ok, fine… I’ll do it.

That’s $862.20 per month.

California has a great RideShare system that allows you to connect with people around you that you could carpool with. Sharing the costs of the commute with just one other person cuts your commute costs in half. Add additional people to the carpool, and you can drop it by even more.

If you’re not in California where you can take advantage of RideShare, you can use the new service provided by RideSearch.com. They will get you in touch with people in your area who are looking to help offset the costs of their commute.

I carpooled for a couple of years when I first moved here. It was great not having to drive every day, and having someone to talk to when you’re stuck in a ridiculous traffic jam for two hours is almost priceless.

RideSearch.com offers tons of information on choosing the perfect carpool, how to remain safe, and how to calculate your savings.

Not only can you save money, you can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and for once, you can drive in the HOV lane legally.

Okay, I’m responding to a damn paid entry…something I said I’d never do. :D

Anyway, I’d heard about the rideshare thinggy when I worked in Walnut Creek (I live in Benicia) and I thought about using it but seriously? I don’t think I could take riding through that commute over the Benicia bridge with another human without possibly eating their brains out and dumping their body. I mean, I probably could a few times but I’m not so sure that I could do it every day.

But now I’m going to work for Raley’s pharmacy. Which is just down the hill from me. I can W-A-L-K to work. Which I probably won’t because I’m lazy but I COULD if I wanted to. (No really I probably will walk more than drive unless I’m having to shop and then I’m not schlepping all those groceries straight up the hill to my house.)

Kentucky Girl - At least my paid entry isn’t all about a sales pitch. I still managed to make it about myself. Cause it’s all about me you know. You could get used to riding together. It’s especially fun if you both scream obscenities at the idiots around you. You live in Benicia? You do know I live in Fairfield, right?

You’re wrong. It is all about ME. Okay, fine…I guess you can make YOUR blog all about you. Sheesh.

And I did read you were in Fairfield. I saw Sodapop responding to you every day like a million times fifty on Twitter so I clicked to see who you were coz I didn’t know and then I saw that you were in Fairfield so I clicked to your blog and wow what a run-on sentence this is. :D

Anyway, hi neighbor! Hope you get over your crud soon. :D

That’s a whole lot of money. After our last car was stolen, we decided to try going car-free. We live in a suburb of Sydney and my doctor and grocery store are within walking distance (2 blocks). John can car-pool to get to and from work (and take the train when his 2 carpool options aren’t available). So far the only downside has been getting away to see attractions or just run to the beach for the day. The train station is 5-6 blocks away and that is about as far as I can go without paying for it.

Robguy’s last blog post…For my friends in Wisconsin…

Robguy - You can always rent a car for those times when you want to get away. It’s way cheaper in the long run.
