American Idol Season 7: Top 6 Perform

American Idol This should be an interesting night, since the theme is Andrew Lloyd Webber songs.

Brooke and Jason may be screwed. Again.

Syesha Mercado is first. She’s picked “One Rock and Roll Too Many.” She looks amazing tonight. Her timing is a tad off at the start. I think Syesha has really hit the peak of what she can do and each week she does an OK performance that is neither the best, nor the worst. This performance is very much the same. It’s good, but I’m not bowled over. She did show a lot of personality. Randy loved it. Paula loved it. Simon called it sexy. He thought it was one of her strongest performances so far.

Jason Castro is next. He’s selected “Memory” from Cats. ALW was bothered by the dreadlocks. The verses are a bit low for him. It was a nice version. I’m not going to rush out and buy it on iTunes at all. It just wasn’t his style. Randy didn’t like it at all. Paula liked his choices. She compared it to Joe Cocker’s “You Are So Beautiful.” Simon said it felt like the longest two minutes of his life. He thought it was miserable, and it wasn’t his style of music.

Brooke White chose “You Must Love Me” from the Evita movie. She blew the intro and asked the band to start again. Shit. That might be the nail in her coffin. Her voice is stunning on this song, though. She is really feeling this song and emoting. Damn. I’m nearly in tears and she’s getting a standing ovation from the crowd. Randy didn’t like her vocals. Paula said, “You must never start and stop.” She loved that Brooke didn’t overact. Simon called it “dramatic” and thought she was very tense. Simon thought she did exactly the right thing by stopping and starting again.

David Archuleta picked “Think of Me” from Phantom of the Opera. The song was definitely meant for a soprano. He’s picked a pretty cool arrangement that makes it much more contemporary style. He completely flubbed the lyrics of the second verse. Mumbled all the way through it. The performance was good enough that I don’t think it will stop the throngs of screaming 9 year old girls. Randy called him the one to beat. Paula called it “perfect.” Simon called it “pleasant” and one of his weakest performances.

Carly Smithson originally picked “All I Ask of You” but ALW told her to perform “Jesus Christ Superstar” instead. Good choice. This was perfect for her! She looks amazing and this song couldn’t have been a better pick. Full of attitude and rock riffs. The band was slamming. This is by far her best performance of the season. I’m actually EXCITED at the end. This was FAN FUCKING TASTIC! Randy didn’t think it was her best performance. Paula thought it might be too high for her but loved it anyway. Simon called it his favorite of the night.

David Cook is closing the show with “Music of the Night” from Phantom of the Opera. I don’t care for David’s “soft” voice. It’s kind of weak and unsupported. I think we can all agree that David is able to kick ass on a rock song. Unfortunately, sensitive, tender and seductive just isn’t in his bag of tricks. I hated this performance of a song that I love. Randy thought it was “amazing.” Paula thought it was fantastic. Simon agreed with me wholeheartedly.

Here’s the breakdown:

Safe:
Carly Smithson
David Archuleta

Danger Danger:
David Cook
Jason Castro
Syesha Mercado

Bye Bye:
Brooke White (cry)

Outside of Carly’s performance this show was a complete disaster. What did you all think?

Ok, I know I wasn’t all excited about American Idol at the beginning, but I think I go weak at the end and cave-in to the Youtube postings…hehe. I think Jason Castro sucks balls and shouldn’t be on the show anymore, he also needs a hair cut, or maybe some shampoo. I thought that Syesha Mercado was a-fucking-mazing along with Carly Smithson. David Cook is friggin hot and I want to touch him…in many naughty ways. As for the rest, I cannot come close to what they are able to sing…but I don’t think they have a chance.

I have to admit that I wasn’t a big fan of having a Broadway show because pop singers don’t do Broadway after the show is over, but there was definitely some separation this week. White is going to be joined by Castro and probably Mercado (although she doesn’t deserve it) and White is getting kicked to the curb. This is my first season watching Idol and a couple buddies and I do a chat on our website (http://mysocialstandards.blogspot.com/) if you want to see everything we’ve had to say from the top 10 down.

I couldn’t understand why they said that David A. was the “one to beat”. I still think David Cook is the best of all of them.

I thought Jason’s thingy was terribly “gay”. Sorry. It was so bad! That’s what I meant.

Syesha was awesome! She really does need to do broadway musicals. That is DEFINITELY her forte.

Do you know which ones already had recording contracts? I would imagine David Cook did. If he did, he doesn’t deserve to win. Only people without recording contracts deserve to win.

    I hated the song choices.

I’m not sure I agree with the comment that Idols don’t do Broadway after the show. Fantasia was on Broadway in the Color Purple and Jenifer Hudson won an Oscar for Dreamgirls, the movie version of a Broadway show. A couple of the biggest things Idols have done after being on the show.

Whall - Me too. I got to see a production of Phantom in Washington DC in 91. Robert Guillaume was playing the Phantom. He was *amazing.* Who knew Benson could sing like that?

Branden - I really like Jason, Brooke and Carly. I fear Brooke is leaving tonight. ;(

Steve - Lots of Idols have gone on to do Broadway. Othurme mentioned Fantasia and Jennifer Hudson…. Clay Aiken is currently in Spam-A-Lot. There are certainly tons of other top ten finalists who have done Broadway now. That being said, the ALW show was a bust.

Absurdist - No one on the show has a current recording contract. The rules state that contestant can’t be in a current management or recording contract. Having had one in the past is not a problem.

Othurme - The only one who did something interesting was Carly. The rest was crap.

it was a very interesting experiment to see who would still hold up under the pressure of going from mariah to andrew lloyd webber.

but alas, this is the point of the show when it could all become a popularity contest. in a way i hope it does because then brooke and jason might still have a chance at staying in it for another week at least. i wouldn’t care if syesha went home tonight.

I am over Brooke, have I mentioned?

I don’t think she’s phony, but she is overwrought and her drama needs to go. She has this air about her that seems to suggest it’s harder and more emotional for her than it is for anyone else.

But it’s not. And her range is so limited. And I’ll stop now.

Mr. Fabulous - It was really the best performance of the night. Not enough, apparently.

Danny - I want Syesha to go next.

Kristy - LOL. You’re entitled to your opinion, even if it is wrong. ;)
