The top 8 guys are up tonight to fight for the all important spot in the top 12.
Tonight’s theme is the 80’s.
Luke Menard is up first and admits to being dressed as a ballerina by his sister as his most embarrassing moment. He is performing “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go” by Wham. So yeah, he’s very very cute, but his vocals are just terrible. It was really weak. I’ve yet to hear him hit a “power” note in any performance. Simon called it “weak.” He’s stealing my words again. Damn that Simon.
David Archuleta is thirsty and he has to pee. Nice. He’s playing the piano tonight. He’s picked “Another Day in Paradise” by Phil Collins. Another solid performance from David. He’s an incredible singer for being 17 years old. I did hear a couple of off notes this time. Simon wants him to lighten up a bit. He also predicted that David will be in the final 2 this season.
Danny Noriega is up next with “Tainted Love” by Soft Cell. Danny is the next Pete Burns. He’s going to end up a transexual performance artist off off off Broadway. I liked his vocals quite a lot, but his performance was pretty cheesy. I’m just not sure what to think about him. If he could stick to *singing* and not all this over the top bullshit. Simon called it “useless” and didn’t like anything about it.
David Hernandez has chosen Celine Dion’s “It’s All Coming Back to Me”. He’s got an incredible voice. In other years, he’d be in line to win. With the competition this season, he’s going to be doing well to make it into the top 6 or so. That is if he can get over the whole gay stripper scandal this week. Paula (who is definitely high tonight) thinks he has one of the best vocals of the season. Simon thinks he’ll breeze through to next week.
David Cook was supposed to go next, but apparently there’s a guitar issue, so Michael Johns is stepping in first. He’s picked “Don’t You Forget About Me” by Simple Minds. He’s got this Michael Hutchence/Jim Morrison vibe about him that makes me think he should really be in a band, not trying to be a solo artist. His vocals tonight were just sort of ok. I’m not on my feet or anything. The judges all liked him. Randy totally compared him to Michael Hutchence. I don’t think he’s going home this week.
David Cook’s guitar has been fixed. He’s picked “Hello” by Lionel Richie. He’s changed the arrangement to be edgier and guitar driven which I think is a great way to interpret the song. Again, David is one of those guys that should really be fronting a band. I really liked this performance. He’s got a great voice. He should sail through. This is my favorite so far tonight. Simon “loved it.”
Jason Castro is performing “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen. This is one of my all time favorite songs. I got a little choked up during this…and so did he. Paula in a moment of lucidity nailed it with the word “vulnerability.” Simon called it “absolutely brilliant.” Jason’s strongest performance so far. I totally love him.
Chikezie is the last guy up. He had a great performance last week, so I’m interested to see how well he does tonight. “She’s All The Woman I Need” by Luther Vandross/Whitney Houston is his pick. He’s doing a pretty good job with it. He’s got a lot of potential, but I haven’t been completely wowed by him yet. Simon doesn’t think it worked at all.
