right before i left for cabo i got bronchitus (is that how you spell it??) and needed to take anitbiotics. doc said that i could drink alcohol while on them. he didn’t know who he was dealing with, but i wasn’t gonna tell him the large amounts that i can consume. shhhhhhh. besides, i think that germs can’t live in such an alcohol filled environment or some such el crapo. (like my spanish??!?! “el crapo” doesn’t work when asking for the rest room in mexico, in case you were wondering.

you seem to have all kinds of knowledge about this flu shot stuff, so i will throw this question your way…what about the disease that my former boss got after his flu shot? some sort of disease that ate away at his nerves…i think it might have ate away at the covering to nerves? started to paralyze him. ran the risk of shutting his lungs down, threw him in the hospital for months. docs would take blood from one arm, send it through a machine to clean it, then put it back in the other arm. when he finally left the hospital he was in a wheelchair and needed therapy to walk again. thankfully he is pretty much fully recovered. i think it was guliene bar syndrome, or something that sounds like what i obviously can’t spell. (sorry) gotta say that i haven’t gotten a flu shot since he came down with that terrible stuff. scared me pretty good.

Hello…not to freak you out about how that syndrome may be more common than you think, but I know someone who had the same exact thing. I have no idea if it was related to a flu shot or not, though.

Although not a doctor, I would have to say that the Guillain-Barre episode your boss had was very rare, if caused by his/her flu vaccine. I think it’s pretty safe to say that the flu vaccine is safer than, say, Tylenol. If you talk to a doctor or more specifically, a Pharmacist, Tylenol is one of the deadliest medicines you can take. Not that I’m against Tylenol or acetaminophen (hope I spelled it right), but most people won’t take a medicine due to its side effects without realizing that the side effects of Tylenol (something they take on a regular basis for different ailments) are liver and kidney toxicity, GI problems, and death. That is just a couple of the side effects. But with everything you put into your body, comes a side effect, we just don’t call them that. Side effects of soda…jitters and weight gain. Eating a hamburger…e-coli and choking. They all can harm our bodies if we look close enough at them. Taking the flu vaccine is something that we should all do (if available to us) as a preventative measure. CDC - Yeah, I’ve tried the flu shot. It was six years ago and I ended up hospitalized for dehydration from getting violently ill afterwards. I wash my hands often, and am usually very careful about how and where I cough.

Hello - While I’m normally not one to ring an alarm bell, I have to agree about the flu shot. I can understand that there are some groups that the benefits outweigh the risks. For me, I just have to deal with the symptoms as they come along.

i refuse to take tylenol. that shit is nasty. if you have even a glass of wine within 48 hours that shit can literally eat holes in your liver. fuck that! i’m more of a ketel one vodka girl and i like (as well as need) my liver!

yeah, i know that syndrome is rare. but i’ll just deal with the flu every now and again. seems that if i take my vitamins (nikken makes the best multi in the world) i can stay pretty healthy. it is when i forget my vitamins at home and drink at trade shows for a week straight, forgetting to sleep, that i run into issues. and if i am at a trade show, i was most likely on a plane. which means some fucker sneezed or coughed on my neck. not a fan of planes, can you tell?

I am not a fan of the flu shot. First of all, I am not elderly, immuno deficient, or otherwise in danger of dying from influenza. Secondly, why the fuck would I inject myself with a virus to avoid getting a virus that may or may not be the one going around?

I agree. Wash your hands, eat well, and for goodness sake, let your body have a little bacteria. it’s gonna make you stronger.

ginamonster - I completely agree about needing some bacteria around. The diagnosis is pneumonia. Probably viral that needs to run its course. If i spike a high fever or get any more shortness of breath at rest I get to spend a night in the hospital on IV antibiotics. Doesn’t that sound like fun?
