Money! (buh duh da da duh…)

Dollar SignI wrote a few weeks ago that I was going to try an experiment with a couple of different types of ads on my blog to try and take advantage of the recent influx of visitors to this page.

I haven’t heard any negative feedback from anyone yet that the ads have been overly intrusive or distracting. (Feel free to let me know if you think that’s the case…) The results so far have been less than stellar, however, I have made enough so far this past month to keep paying for my web host. That’s not altogether insignificant. It means that technically, this blog no longer COSTS me money. I can live with that for now!

A big thank you to whomever clicked an Amazon link from my site and went on to spend over 100 bucks on books. I notice that you didn’t purchase the item you clicked on, which means you purposefully used my affiliate link to purchase some items you were already planning to buy. That was really cool of you.

I’ve been reading a lot of sites that swear they are making several thousands of dollars every month. The only thing I can say that they have in common is that they talk about making several thousands of dollars every month, interspersed with some geek-speak about search engines and keywords.

No one really talks about what people like me, regular, everyday-slice-of-life-type bloggers can do to improve their chances of making an income from their blogs. That’s why I started BlogTopix.net to try and weed out the geek and translate it into a format that non-geeks can understand. I don’t know that I have done that great of a job with it yet, but there’s a learning curve and a LOT of reading that has to be done.

One of the sites that I have spent a long time browsing through is John Chow’s. He runs a blog that helps you make money online. He’s got a top 100 ranking on Technorati and he is offering to link to my blog if I review his blog.

He’s got a ton of information on his site. He apparently runs several different blogs (another thing that the successful bloggers have in common) and he often posts his monthly income on his site. I’m supremely jealous.

There are a couple of complaints that I have about his site, though… mainly that he has spent far more time lately blowing his own horn than writing useful content. Every other post seems to be about some new sponsor, or some new program that he is promoting instead of actually providing content. I also wish he’d address some issues for non-business bloggers.

His grammar occasionally bugs the hell out of me too, but now I’m just nit picking.

I’m not aware of any really successful bloggers who read this page… if there are any, please out yourself. I’d love to hear from you.

* Did I successfully convey the tone of the Pink Floyd song with my title?

  2. Hi, I was in the same batch of reviews as you, and my visitor numbers are actually down since the link from John Chow. I was curious as to whether you received that great influx of traffic that John promised.

  3. Highhena – Welcome! According to my latest stats, there is no change whatsoever in the number of visits. I received a grand total of 10 unique visits with JohnChow.com as the referring link. I can only hope that my Technorati ranking has improved as promised.

  4. One thing I don’t like about JohnChow.com is that the blog often posted with unrelated info. The Title of the blog is ‘Make money with John Chow’, but when I visit the blog all I can read is reviewme sponsor post or post about his new car or his travel experience. His blog is not that helpful for people to learn how to make money online, especially to beginners.

  5. Alan – I completely agree, his site is no longer that helpful. There’s way too much discussion about how “evil” he is. And frankly, the promised “loads of traffic” that this review of his site was supposed to generate was a major dud. I got exactly 12 hits from John Chow’s site to this post. If you dig through his archives you can find some good information. Personally, I think Dosh Dosh and Shoemoney do a better job of giving good tips for beginners.
