American IdolI’m about to give up on my show. This is hard for me, because I ::heart:: American Idol.

I’m halfway through the girl’s performances tonight and I’m just disgusted. I really don’t think I can take another night of bad diva imitations. I don’t want to hear the same Aretha, Chaka Khan, Mary J Blige, Whitney Houston songs over and over again.

I hate that this generation of female artists has grown up attending the Mariah Carey School for Over Singing Screechy Nasaly Earth Mamas.

The melody of a song is sacred. It is equally important as the lyrics. Trills and vocal runs are great to COLOR a song with… used sparingly. It’s like having a accent color on a wall. Doing a run over every single note and line and phrase of a song makes a gigantic mess. Even Jackson Pollack knows when to stop throwing color at the canvas.

I think the artist that best gets this concept is probably pre-crack addiction Whitney. You know, back when she was classy, beautiful… around the time period of “The Bodyguard” when she was queen of everything musical.

Antonella, go home. You don’t belong here. Everyone has seen the pictures already, there is no reason to continue proving that you suck on live television.

Jordin, I actually enjoyed your cover of “Heartbreaker.” You’re no Pat Benatar, but you didn’t make me run screaming from the room like…

Haley, what the hell was that? You tried weakly to sing a bad Faith Hill song. You had no breath support, were flat, and I actually took the time during your performance to take a leak that was more satisfying than your vocals.

Sabrina, meh.

Stephanie, that was horrid. You’re not Chaka and you murdered that song. I really like you, but please stop it.

Lakisa, oh goodness, did you actually just sing a Whitney song and you stuck pretty closely to the melody without all the vocal gymnastics? Wonderful. Thank you. Now please pick a song that is against type a bit… Pretty please?

Gina, I think that’s the first time an Evanescence song has been performed on Idol. Cool. You were out of breath and a bit flat at the end, but you were obviously nervous. I hope you go through, if just to keep the spot away from Antonella or Haley.

Melinda, we should give you the title American Idol and spend the next 12 weeks watching Prison Break reruns. That was brilliant.

It’s been a couple of years since there was an Idol season that had a clear winner from the beginning of the show. I think the last one was Fantasia, unless you count the season with the mysterious disappearance of Mario Vasquez, which I still say was an effort on the part of the Idol producers to make the show interesting.

Do you think they’ll try and get rid of Melinda?

I liked the girls better than the guys. I cringe at the guttural assertions of their voices and I will probably die if I have to hear another (as you said) Earth Momma song, but still I am holding out for one of the girls to have an excellent rock n’ roll thing come out that I will totally fall in love with.

ok…guess what…i watched last night..just for you…all I can say is … ahhhh i am getting old…lol…i just wish for once these wannabe idols would break the mold and sing something actually suited to their personality and voice instead of the same old cookie cutter songs that we hear year after year after year…that is all i have to say…ba-bye….

As much as I love Melinda, and I do, I am still rooting for Lakisha. I agree that she needs to come out with an “against type” song, because I would love to see what she could do with something a bit more rock. But, that girl has one fabulous voice. Melinda is awesome, and I would be happy if she won, but she does not have quite the range and TONE that Lakisha has. Melinda’s PERFORMANCE last night was the best, but if listen to Lakisha’s tone, range, and the fact that she was pretty much spot-on, I think she’s the better vocalist. But, whatever - just get those hideous skinny white bitches off the stage :-)

I’m totally with you on the melody thing. If I were a composer, I might even be a little offended if my songs were adapted like that. I mean, a little bit of flavor is one thing, but to elaborate at every turn gets predictable and boring. Our National Anthem is a great example. When was the last time you heard it sung like we sang it in elementry school?

It’s almost as if the emotion has been taken out of the performance in lieu of vocal pyrotechnics. Parlor tricks that distract you from the soul of the song. One of the things that I think makes a musician is the ability to convey emotion through the music. A vocalist does this with their voice. Too many trills and frills and the emotion and melody are lost.

Melinda can sing circles around EVERYONE on the show. Lakisha can along with the record better than most people and is the second best singer on the show, but Melinda is the only person that absolute control of her voice and knows how to use that control. She knows how/when/why to step away from the melody, how/when/why to get back into the melody, and doesn’t over use that ability. She is the only one that doesn’t allow the audience to compare her to the original artists and owns every song as her own.

should i be embarrassed that i flipped between american idol and america’s next top model? “never mind, don’t answer,” she types as she hangs her head in shame. sigh.

Mist 1 - Don’t bother falling in love with some rock song that they come out with. The winners will be forced to put out shitty hip hop records. See also: Ruben, Fantasia, Katherine McPhee.

Tanjua - Yes they desperately need to break out and do something original.

Jessica - I think Lakisha is great, don’t get me wrong, but I think Melinda has a much more polished voice. Lakisha could win me over if she could learn to find some subtlety.

Ginamonster - Exactly.

Othurme - I’m totally with you on that. Melinda understands how to make a song HER performance instead of an imitation of someone else’s performance.

hello - lol. I can’t get into Top Model. Too many skinny people who can’t sing. Oh wait…

I really love doolittle. God knows what will happen in the end with this season. It just isn’t the same this year * le sigh *
