So it has been a mere 4 hours since I posted the article about Ann Coulter’s big mouth at the CPAC yesterday….
When I posted it, I jumped over to Technorati to see if there were any other posts that had anything interesting to say on the subject. Technorati listed exactly ONE other site in their WTF (Where’s the Fire) section about it.
Now there are over 1000 with more being added as I write this.
Unbelievably, a large number of the posts are supportive of Ann’s statement. There are many that say things to the effect of, “While I don’t think John Edward’s is a faggot, I do think he’s a pussy.”
And a lot more who are trying to deflect attention from Ann onto one of my favorite personalities, Bill Maher.
What is the problem with Bill Maher you may ask? Well, if you didn’t catch last night’s Real Time on HBO (I did), Bill asked his panel which included Barney Frank, Joe Scarborough, and John Ridley about a flap that happened over at The Huffington Post:
For the lazy, I’ll paraphrase: Bill asks, “What about the people who commented on The Huffington Post that it was a shame that the attempt on Dick Cheney’s life in Afghanistan failed? Ariana took the post down, but don’t they have the right to that opinion?”
At the end of the clip, Barney Frank points out that Bill wasn’t saying that he wished the VP had died, just that he was quoting from the website. At the end of the clip, Bill says that if the VP “did die, more people would live.”
One post in particular that irked me, Bill Maher Speaks, The Left is Silent, says:
Bill Maher has spoken regarding Cheney, and he contends not only should liberals be allowed to wish Cheney was dead, but that Cheney should actually be dead for our own good.
Watch the clip, while I wait uselessly for the left to pretend to care.
Hypocrites. If the left allows Bill Maher to pass on this, then they should shut the hell up over Ann Coulter. I am sick of the double standard. I’m tired of the expectation that conservatives have to play nice. The left has figured out how to exploit it, and that morally correct but strategically dangerous playing nice is what lost congress in the mid term elections.
I wonder when exactly anyone has expected the conservatives to play nice? When has that EVER been the expectation? Is the author saying that Ann Coulter’s comments were simply an example of a conservative hitting below the belt? I left the following comment:
I don’t mean to be rude, but, did you even watch the clip that you posted?
Bill did not say what you claim he says. He is quoting from the Huffington Post at the beginning of the clip. At the end of the clip he says that if Cheney “did die, more people would live.”
That’s quite different from what your post alleges.
It’s also very different from Ann Coulter calling John Edwards a “faggot.”
Also, Bill Maher = Comedian. Ann Coulter = supposed political expert.
The author, Karl, responded:
Note, Ann did *not* call him a faggot. She said she couldnt talk about him becuase using the word faggot would get her rehab.
Maybe you need to pay attention closer. As I noted, it was meant to imply it, but she never SAID it.
Maher’s comment is ridiculous on its merits as the VP has no direct impact on who lives or dies, and trying to see a positive in his death is tacky.
Maher is as often a pundit as a comedian, and Ann is as much a comedianne as a pundit.
My comment about Maher is accurate, as trying to see a positive in human lives for Cheney being dead is akin to “actually be dead for our own good”
Their cases are similar enough that equal outrage should be seen. It isn’t.
And that is hypocrisy.
How does one argue with someone that insists an apple and a leprechaun are the same thing?
My response:
I fail to see any real distinction between “I’d say he’s a faggot, but I’d get rehab” and “He’s a faggot.” It’s hardly an ‘implication.’
It’s also WAY beyond tacky. It’s patently offensive.
I’m not going to argue the point that Cheney has a real interest in the continuation of this war which does in fact directly impact who lives and dies, since you clearly support the administration and that would be pointless.
Equating continued persecution and offensive bigotry by a political figure with the off the cuff remark about the death of the vp by a comedian isn’t hypocrisy, it’s moronic.
(ooo.. there’s a true example of implication…)
I’m sure Karl isn’t going to let that go, so you’ll have to follow along over at his place.
And just so you know, I blame Scott for all of this. He does this to me all the time.
The point of my two posts still stands unchallanged.
If you note most of the conservatives are challanging Coulter on her comment. I even said that her comments make me cringe as often as note.
But clearly as demonstrated over and over, she is playing by the rules the left has laid down. People like Al Franken, Randi Rhodes, KOS, Half the authors at HuffPo and anyone on Democrat Underground, all say daily things far worse then what Coulter said, yet for the most part the left yawns. They are free to speak.
Ann Coulter should be judged on the merits of her comment. Her comment in context was a mutli sided bolt at Edwards and his blogger fiasco using the Greys anatomy scandal as its means. It also wasnt really very funny.
But Neither was the gloating of all the leftists, including Maher, upset and disappointed that a suicide bomber missed Cheney.
It should be concerning that security was breached at a US base, that the Taliban found out he was there, and that they targetted a a member of our government for assasination. WHat if it had been Pelosi? Or Bill/Hillary Clinton? What then? If Sean Hannity had said what Bill Maher said, would the left sit back and ignore it?
I think not.
Moi?
It would be so unlike me to cause trouble.
I haven’t heard much of anything out of the conservative camp that comes close to a reprimand to Ann Coulter. A “spokesman” for Romney (the candidate she was actually *endorsing*) merely said the comment was “offensive.”
I certainly don’t recall having ever heard anyone from the Franken/Rhodes camp ever use the word “faggot.” I’ve never heard them say anything along the lines of “the Earth is yours, take it, rape it.”
I get the joke that she was trying to make. Not only was it not funny, it was offensive.
Maher didn’t express disappointment that a suicide bomber missed Cheney. He was quoting from the commenters on the HuffPo blog. His comment “if he was dead, more people would live” doesn’t even denote any personal interest in Cheney’s death.
The left isn’t ignoring anything.. there’s NOTHING to fret about. It’s a non-issue. If Bill Maher had called John Edwards a “faggot” I guarantee you the left (and homosexuals like myself) would be completely out of joint about it.
Scott – Of course not. You can’t possibly be held responsible. Nothing ever sticks to you! *shakes fist*
Thanks for clarifying this. yet another example of the noise machine making s* up and running away with it (such as “Gore said he invented the internet).
Also, it’s very funny how they now think that they disavow outrageous statements from their own – just because, uncharacteristically 2 people jumped in now. I’d love to see the chorus of outrage at Dick Cheney telling Leahy to go Cheney himself on the Senate floor. Or who was criticizing Bush for his “Bring it on” statement ? (the one “error” he admitted to)
Ann Coulter should not be viewed as any “political expert”, but as an entertainment writer who appeals to far right readers.
She manages to sell books by being controversial, and what a lucky break, all this controversy just a few months before her next book comes out.
