Your turn

I haven’t fallen off the face of the earth or anything.

I know, you’re totally worried about it, right?

There’s a lot of stuff happening at the moment that I can’t write about yet… I will, but not while it’s happening. I don’t know why but the saying, “When it rains, it pours,” is screaming to be typed out.

I want to write about other things, but can’t really concentrate long enough to do so. You’ll have to settle for this post instead. And to be completely lazy about it, I’m going to pose a question to you dear readers:

What are the best/worst career decisions you have ever made in your life so far?

Discuss.

Every career decision seems like the best one in the beginning. I am always wrong.

Best decision: Turning down offer to become Child Care Coordinator for the YMCA, instead working as a bartender to finish nursing school. Instead of being in Prison for brutally beating children. I know get to work when I want and where I want.

Worst decision: I am an eternal optimist so I tend to white wash any bad moves.

i was safe and comfy working at a bank making practically nothing but loving every day. my customers and coworkers were incredible. the day a customer of the bank’s asked me to work for them i was shocked seeing as how i hadn’t even looked for employment. they practically doubled my salary and offered me a cushy office. how could i turn it down, yet why did my heart break at the thought of leaving the bank? one word: change.

when i handed my resignation letter to my boss i cried. he read it and he cried. but he knew it was best for me so he encouraged me and supported my decision.

the best decision i ever made. well, that and not marrying the exboyfriend, but who can really say which was better? all i know is i would not be who i am today if it weren’t for this place. (yeah, 8 years later and i still enjoy coming to work every day!)

good luck to you. change sucketh.

Deep in your heart, you know what you need to do. You don’t need us to validate it. You are a good person that just wants to do the best for everyone involved. No matter what your decision becomes, just know that you have a great support line that will back your decision, and that I’m here if you ever need to talk about it. Good luck!

Best career decision? Perhaps it is not the decision itself; but, rather, making the best of the decision made. From a little acorn, an oak tree grew.

worst? Leaving my phone operator/CSR position to be an “environmental activist”. I didn’t know I would be canvasing the streets alone at night for CALPERG. When I had to pee I had to ask to use stranger’s bathrooms. I lasted 3 days and never picked up my paycheck. I quit and was unemployed for 2 months. I often wonder how my life would be different had I kept my customer service position. I was good at it. I like my life now though.

I’ve had 4 “professional” jobs over the past 12 years. The secret to being happy is to consider who you’ll be working with, especially if you’re working FOR someone else, and if you are a match for the postion. I’ve been lucky. Even though starting something new is always scary, each time I’ve changed jobs I’ve found rewards in the new position.

From the comments it sounds like you’re considering a career change? The ultimate question is “if you don’t take the risk will you always regret it?” If the answer is “no. or probably not,” then now isn’t the time to change. If the answer is “yes…” well, then you have your answer.

It’s not telemarketing is it?

Mist - There’s something to be said for consistency. I didn’t say it was something good.

Killer - Though you could have had an incredible career as a ‘knob polisher’ in prison.

hello - Usually change doesn’t bother me. It’s a bit different this time.

Toby - I’m not looking for validation. The stuff going on isn’t so much a career decision as an issue with someone I consider(ed?) a friend. Thank you for the profession of support, though!

DB - Thank ya. :)

Crail - A silver lining guy… I like it.

Gina - I would be soooooo screwed having to ask strangers to use their bathroom. You may recall I have serious issues with bathrooms that are not my own.

Liz - Oh god no on the telemarketing. I once did collections for a medical company. That was probably the worst job ever. I’m evil, but not that evil.
