I’m Quacking Mad!There is a heated discussion going on at Dan’s site, continued from an original post and comments over at Driving Barefoot. Seems ParaTed2k at Driving Barefoot doesn’t understand the point of World AIDS Day because he feels HIV should not be a political issue. He also basically states that if you get AIDS, you must be gay, and you deserve it. He compares it to a smoker getting lung cancer… that a gay person engages in a high-risk behavior despite the consequences. He actually says:

in The US it is still mostly Gay men contracting it.

because

According to the CDC:

In 2004, the estimated number of diagnoses of AIDS in the United States was 42,514. Adult and adolescent AIDS cases totaled 42,466 with 31,024 cases in males and 11,442 cases in females. Also in 2004, there were 48 AIDS cases estimated in children under age 13.

Apparently he believes that the 31,024 men that became infected in 2004 all must have been gay. The CDC states no such thing. They don’t make shit up.

I left the following comment on his blog, which is under moderation.

Ted,

I can’t believe you are claiming to be so educated about the AIDS crisis.

First of all, Gay Organizations are most likely to be vocal about AIDS research and support because people like you have laid the “blame” for this disease at the feet of the homosexual community. AIDS struck in the generation JUST following the famous Stonewall Riots, the first generation of gays who felt there was some hope of equal treatment under the law. The discovery of HIV set back homosexual civil rights over a decade.

The gay community is also the most likely of any other demographic to be open and honest about their sero-status.

I feel no shame whatsoever blaming the Reagan administration for failing to acknowledge the epidemic. Ronald Reagan himself APOLOGIZED to the gay community for not making research a priority. He apologized for bowing to pressure from the “moral” majority to let the ‘gays kill themselves off.’

AIDS *is* a political issue for many reasons. It is a very small percentage of the US population who has access to affordable healthcare. Drug companies make tons of money selling expensive HIV medications that only slow the progression of the disease, with no real hope of a cure in sight. Any time you start mixing money with health you end up with a bitter political fight. As long as people continue believing that only homosexuals or IV drug users are at risk, AIDS will be used as a weapon against the gay community, just perfect for the politicos who would like to continue denying gays basic civil rights.

Spend a few minutes really reading the CDC website about transmission and infection rates. Gays are WAY down the list. A 25 year old straight black woman is at the highest risk for HIV infection. Or try this site: http://www.avert.org/statistics.htm.

It is ignorant of you to continue comparing smoking or second hand smoke to the transmission of HIV via gay sex. People choose to smoke. People do not choose to be gay.

People DO however choose to ignore all the scientific evidence that tells us that there are ways to prevent HIV. People DO choose to have unprotected sex. The current administration has repeatedly stated they believe that condoms do nothing to prevent HIV infection, and as long as someone keeps saying it, the sheep will keep believing it.

I’ve worked as a paramedic in a busy metropolis, and in a very busy emergency room. I know for a fact that you are much more likely to contract hepatitis from contact with a patient than HIV. You are claiming to be a medical professional, yet you are propagating false/misleading information.

You should be ashamed of yourself.

I just… can’t… ugh!

We are living in the dark ages of massive misunderstanding on how the human body works. Viruses are dead. They are stated to be “alive” in the cell. It is akin to swallowing a small stone and saying now the stone is now alive as it is moving around in the body. This is what some people are trying to get the world to believe in order to sell treatments and fund their research. Viruses are about one billion times smaller than the size of a living cell. Does it get thrown at the glass wall of the cell which then shatters, is that how it destroys the cell as they say?? Being afraid of something as infinitessimally small as a virus is like being King Kong and being afraid of an ant. Testing for what they call HIV only finds antibodies, a living organism in the body that is a part of the natural immune defense system. Thus, when someone tests positive for HIV as they claim, in all actuality, when you look at how these tests work, the only thing that is ever found is antibodies, which are natural to everyone. The tests do not even find antibodies that are specific to what they claim is HIV. AIDS is not a disease, it is a syndrome. It is a way to describe numerous diseases that were all blamed on a virus. The virus actually has never truly been found using high scientific standards. Study further and you will see the world has been duped. Condoms are claimed to protect people. Believe it if you will. Condoms have holes in them bigger than any virus, thus as stated in 1993 on Morton Downey Show, where a guest representing the medical community said “it’s like having the front door open and flies go right through” then later said “well, that’s all we have”. The whole thing is a big botched information campaign fueled by hysteria and fear and well meaning attempts at solving various health problems by latching onto claims that there is one cause (HIV) when that is impossible when dealing with multiple conditions of disease as the tattered AIDS definition umbrella covers.

Yikes. That’s pretty controvercial, regardless of how they get it I don’t think anyone -deserves- aids.

Congrats on the great review :)

I compared AIDS to Cancer and Heart Disease because each can be contracted through high risk activities. If you deny this, then you and reality are apparently strangers. If you say that I wrote that ONLY those who engage in the high risk activities will get either of these diseases, you are a blatant liar.

As long as fools insist on playing political games while people die of AIDS it will continue to rage. What I am saying is, let’s cut the poltical crap and treat AIDS for what it is, a legitimate medical condition.

Wakingupfromadream - That is the biggest load of bullshit anyone has tried to feed me in years. While it is true that we are still perplexed by viruses, to say that they don’t exist or don’t cause fundamental changes in a cell’s structure is foolish. Yes, testing is done using antibody analysis. That’s because viruses are unlike bacteria. They can not be cultured in a lab environment (the main form of testing for bacterial infections).

You’re making an argument that is akin to saying that testing for a hormonal shift in a woman offers no proof that woman is pregnant, because you didn’t see the fetus. That’s ridiculous.

The fact that your stated source was some ‘guest from the medical community’ (Dr. Ruth? Your chiropractor? Your veterinarian?) who appeared on the MORTON FUCKING DOWNY show says about all I could ever say about the legitimacy of your belief. Check out this page on the condoms4life website. (A group, btw, founded by members of the Catholic community.) They actually state scientific sources. Not the guy best known for bringing trans-sexual teenage hookers with midget tossing parents to television.

Breigh - Actually I have to disagree with you here… there are people who deserve to get AIDS. The people who scream loudest about it being a gay disease and use it as a weapon against teaching safer sex to teens, and as a point in their homophobic diatribes. THOSE people deserve to get it, and suffer the discrimination and humiliation heaped upon them by people who share their views.

Othurme - I don’t think it’s necessary, he has clearly outed himself as one already. There’s no question about this one.

Ted - Of course I do not deny that AIDS can be contracted because of high risk behavior. What I deny is that gay sex is inherently a high risk behavior, which IS what you state in your article.

The fact is ANY unprotected sex with ANYONE is a high risk behavior, not only for HIV but a myriad of other STDs.

The AIDS response will cease being a political issue when idiots stop distorting the facts and statistics. You talk as though AIDS is the only medical condition stuck in a quagmire of politics, as though the tobacco lobby doesn’t have a strangle hold on legislators. As though the Food and Nutrition councils aren’t blocking legislation designed to make our foods healthier. As though erection pills aren’t being discussed in Senate meetings.

As a member of the medical community, you should be passing on truthful, scientific information, not homophobic rhetoric.

I do, but apparently most “activists” only care about the politics of it. Sad since the politics of it hasn’t brought about a single treatment for anyone.

AIDS is a medical condition… It is terminal. There is nothing political about that.

Awesome comment, Jester.

Do you happen to know whether or not the “high risk” for black women is specific for the US or whether it’s a global statistic. Because global statistics are definitely dominated by HIV infected people in Africa, where, you guessed it, young black women are the group with the highest number of newly infected individuals.

My mom once said that (CAUTION: irony ahead) nature always found a way to cure itsself and AIDS was nature’s way to control over population. Pretty cruel comment, however not as cruel as the truth, namely that too many of us look away and LET IT HAPPEN!

1. Let’s say it’s not all gay men. So what? His point that it’s a behavior-based disease is still valid.

2. Many men lie about being gay when interviewed by the CDC.

I shouldn’t have to do this, but I’m not a bigot. I just think you should be honest, right?

Nelson wrote on December 3rd, 2006 at 10:32 pm

t - I’ll send you the links to the research I’ve read. It’s actually quite interesting. What I quoted was worldwide, however in the US black women are 2nd in line.

Cruel, yes, but not necessarily wrong. Nature does have a way of ‘culling the herd’ in almost every species.

Nelson - 1. I have never argued that the disease is not behavior-based. The fact that he INSISTS on singling out gays is what I find incredibly offensive and misleading. He states several times, in several different ways that gay equals promiscuous equals AIDS. It is also indicative of the global problem of AIDS being labeled a “gay disease” which is exactly why organizations such as Act Up and Queer Nation have to turn the fight political, which is what this argument is about.

2. Yes, I’m sure many men lie about being gay when the CDC asks. What is your point? That any man who gets HIV is gay, but not admitting it? Please elaborate.
